5/23 Fly Fishing Report

It's not Friday but I didn't think there was much in reporting on Friday with Saturday's forecast.  The bigger fish have left the Chesapeake for the most part.  There are still a few cows milling around since the water temps have remained pretty much ideal.  Eastern Bay has seen a number of fish that I would not have expected for this time of year as has Chesapeake Beach which has had an awesome bite.  There's not a ton of structure off of Chesapeake Beach so the bass will be wherever the bait is which can change as often as each tide.  I still think there's a solid fly bite in the rivers and the river mouths on an outgoing tide.  I haven't seen the topwater, lowlight bite turn on yet but that could just be me.

Remember: If anything's gonna happen it's gonna happen out there!

Keys tarpon fishing 2016

So last weekend was our annual 3 day tarpon fishing trip. We had Albert Ponzoa, Rich Keating, Scott Collins and Mike Weikert as guides this year. A cold front the day before we got there really made the fish finicky and unwilling to bite but I managed 5 poons between 60 and 100 pounds. I imagine this week they're probably eating pretty well given how poorly they were eating last week.

Friday Fishing Forecast 5/13

Hey swabs!

As of today we've had 17 straight days with rain.  I think it's a record and a pain regardless.  The good news is that there are bass in the mid-bay and they've finally started eating top water flies and baits.  Fish moving water around points in the rivers with sinking lines but occasionally throw a banger or gurgler on a floater especially if you hear or see fish breaking water or chasing bait.  Incoming could be really good because it'll bring cleaner, saltier water than the dirty fresh water we're seeing on the outgoing.  I've also heard of a good bite in 25-35' of water on fish leaving the spawning rivers.  Catch em up!

This is a fantastic review of one of the best fly fishing movies of all time:

In my mind "Tarpon" captures to the fullest extent possible the peak of the old Florida keys, before resorts and t-shirt shops came into play.  I found it remarkable that the creators of the movie had the forethought to make a movie about it before it was too late.

End of April captains log

Hey swabs!
April was a fun month of fishing but a little slow by what I'm used to in fishing the Chesapeake. We got a lot of cold fronts and high pressure systems that came through right before weekends which I think really hurt the shallow water bite. We still caught fish but not as many as I'd hoped. Trollers seemed to do ok but they were fishing for 6-8 hours for one or two bass. The ones they did catch were big though.

I'm going to start doing a Friday fly fishing report and forecast which should be fun. I'm headed to the keys this weekend and the cape later in the month so there's a lot to look forward to!
